Dr. Daryl McCartney Executive Manager
Dr. McCartney has his PhD in Environmental Engineering and is on secondment from the University of Alberta, where he is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. McCartney has developed successful research, teaching, design and operations careers in both solid waste management and wastewater treatment. He has a passion to establish the EWMCE as the foremost place in the world for practitioner-based waste management research, technology commercialization and training.
He has authored, or co-authored 139 journal manuscripts, conference papers, and technical report publications (18 peer reviewed journal manuscripts published in the past five years). He has been involved in the world of engineering design, construction, and management for the past 35 years; with the last 17 years in academia, starting at the University of Manitoba in 1993 and since 2002, at the University of Alberta instructing courses that include wastewater treatment, solid waste management and environmental assessment. During this time he established Environmental Engineering Programs in Civil and Biosystems Engineering and assisted with the establishment of the Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources at the University of Manitoba. |

Harpiyar Singh B.E.,M.Asc., CGA
Harpiyar Singh is member of Certified General Accountant society and oversees the financial affairs of the EWMCE. Harpiyar is an asset to the management team with his strong analytical skills and business acumen. Harpiyar earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in India, and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Concordia University in Montréal. While earning his Master’s degree, Harpiyar worked as research assistant and published several research papers. His desire to learn more has brought him to the field of business. His expertise in business development includes operational analysis, cost estimation, and project and business management.

Dr. Hassan Katalambula Technology Development Manager
Hassan Katalambula was recently hired as the new Technology Development Program Manager. Hassan has a MA. Sc. degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax and a PhD from Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. He is a chemical engineer with more than 15 years experience working in research, process design, design and fabrication, as well as environmental protection through waste management and pollution control. He has experience with energy and waste management-related projects including coal gasification, power generation from municipal solid wastes, and co-gasification of biomass with coal and petcoke. He has also worked on product recovery from industrial wastewater streams.

Dr. Kathleen Londry Research Program Manager
Dr. Kathleen Londry has been actively involved in research since 1986, spanning a wide variety of fields from environmental microbiology and microbial ecology to biogeochemistry and astrobiology. Kathleen earned a BSc and an MSc in Microbiology from the University of Alberta, and a PhD in microbiology from the University of Oklahoma, specializing in anaerobic biodegradation of complex pollutants. She did her post-doctoral research at NASA, where she advanced her approach to cultivate successful relationships with a wide variety of engineers, chemists, geologists, and biologists. Kathleen recently returned to Alberta to take up a senior research associate position at the University of Alberta, where she is currently an adjunct professor. Kathleen is now the Research Program Manager at the Centre of Excellence. Her diverse background, with interdisciplinary collaborations in basic and applied research in many environmental disciplines makes her a great addition to the Management Team.

Janice Isberg Education Program Manager
Janice obtained her Master’s Degree in Education Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Alberta where she also received her Bachelor of Education Degree in Secondary Education. Janice has worked in public education for 20 years as both a teacher and an administrator and has extensive experience coordinating professional development training. For the past four years Janice has been working in the private sector as the Executive Director of a non-profit fundraising organization. Her combined experiences ensure that the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence can continue their history of providing quality training for solid waste and waste water operators and that everybody has access to current and ground breaking research in the field of waste management.
