Spreading knowledge not product

EWMCE is a proud sposor of the Water School program.

The Water School is a Canadian non-profit organization.  Its mission is to provide clean water for the developing world – simply and sustainably.

The science of the SODIS (solar disinfection) is proven with over 20 years of research studies (www.sodis.ch).  The Water School has refined this technology and developed a successful and sustainable implementation program. Children are trained through schools and are bringing this knowledge and technology back home to educate their families. The Ray of Hope program focuses on health and sanitation through the purification of water. Plastic bottles are in abundance in developing countries, and are inexpensive. Contaminated water is collected in the bottles and left in the sunlight for 24 hours. The strong UV rays from the sun purify the water. All components of the program are locally available, accessible and sustainable at a very low cost.  The real benefit accrues through the dramatically reduced mortality rates of children and adults within these communities.

The Water School programs are managed through local Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and agencies. Implementation is done by local community groups (schools, churches, government institutions) who share a vision for clean water.

The program includes training on health and sanitation and the use of the SODIS system. It also includes follow-up to make sure that the people use the system correctly. Once the parents see the impact of clean water on their lives, it becomes a habit that they will not give up. They become advocates of The Water School program and train their peer group.

The Water School is operating in Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan. Partnerships are being developed in Asia and Latin America. To learn more about this organization, please visit www.thewaterschool.org.
